Why Choose a Non 12 Step Substance Abuse Treatment Center?

The 12 Step Program is an Outdated Model

For decades, the traditional model for substance abuse treatment has centered around the 12 Steps. Because of this, there is a common misconception that following a 12 Step program is the only way to recover from alcohol or drug abuse. There are many reasons a 12 Step substance abuse treatment center may not be the right choice for you:

  1. The 12 Steps are not based on evidence.
  2. They are in direct conflict with what science tells us about the nature of addiction.
  3. They require you to believe you are powerless over your addiction.
  4. They define addiction in terms of “moral shortcomings”.
  5. They require you to believe you can only get better if you surrender your will to a higher power.
  6. Functionally, the 12 Steps are more like a religion than substance abuse treatment.

Substance abuse treatment centers that are based on the 12 Step model are using outdated ideas and methods that have a very low success rate. The 12 Steps were created by laypeople at a time when very little was known about addiction. Science has since given us a much clearer picture of how addiction works. Evidence-based substance abuse treatment produces better outcomes and does not require belief in the 12 Steps to be successful.

What Does Science Tell Us?

Functional MRI studies can now show us the long term changes that occur in the brain of someone struggling with addiction. These images reveal the fact that addiction is not a moral shortcoming. It is a neuro-physiological disturbance of the brain that requires treatment, not a moral code.

Many substance abuse treatment centers have tried to bridge the gap between science and the 12 Steps by combining evidence-based practices with the 12 Step Program. Unfortunately, science and the 12 Step beliefs are in direct conflict with each other. This can send mixed messages that are confusing and defeating to a client’s recovery efforts.

  1. Research shows that with evidence-based approaches, such as CBT and mindfulness-based relapse prevention, people can gain power over their addiction.
  2. Research shows addiction is not a moral shortcoming, but a neuro-physiological disturbance of the brain. Seven of the 12 steps focus on “moral shortcomings”.
  3. 12 Step-based programs require clients to “work the steps”. While the steps might help someone who is trying to develop better character, they are not substance abuse treatment. Their focus on “powerlessness” and “defects of character” can actually reinforce negative core beliefs that are already problematic for the client.

What Our Clients Have to Say About Our Substance Abuse Treatment Program:

“I can say without any fear of contradiction that the 30 days I spent at Ripple changed my life forever. Everyone there, from the techs, the therapists, the culinary staff, to the owners, took a personal interest in my recovery. The evidence based therapies provided so much more than any other program or treatment for the diseases of addiction than I have ever experienced. God bless them all, each and every one as they continue to help others in their battles against alcoholism and addiction.” ~ L.D.

“When finally giving in to needing professional help, I was skeptical about spending the money, skeptical about in-patient, and really not sure. But one thing I WAS sure  of, is that I needed help, so I decided to not put a dollar amount on what my life was worth. The money I spent, was the BEST investment I made in my lifetime…

My result, a complete change in my life and the sober life I had been praying for…The shame that I came in with, I did not take home. I left with freedom to embrace who and what I was, and have hope that I no longer had to be a slave to my addiction. Thank you Ripple. I will pay forward what I have learned and will always hold a special place in my heart for you. ” ~ Gisele, a very Grateful Recovery Alcoholic.

“Finding Ripple Recovery Ranch without a doubt saved my life.  I had been to treatment before, but this time I had hit rock bottom in my life.  I thought I had no hope. Walking through the doors the first time, I got a sense of peace like I had never felt before.  Even though I was very foggy at this time, I knew I was in the right place.  As days went by, I began to see clearer little by little.  The staff, including every person that works there, have a loving kindness approach towards the clients.  The one-on-one therapy is like no other…the yoga therapy, alpha stem, neurofeedback, meditation and all of the other offerings they have sets Ripple ahead of any other treatment center in the nation in my opinion.  Of course treatment is only what you make it, but when you stick your hand out for help the staff there grab it and lead you into the light and guide you through recovery…I truly believe that I was guided to Ripple by my higher power.  I have another chance, which I did not think I had.” ~ S.S. (Illinois)

Ripple in still water, when there is no pebble tossed, no wind to blow. Reach out your hand, if your cup be empty. If your cup is full, may it be again. Let it be known, there is a fountain, that was not made by the hands of man.

Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark... Do not let the hero in your soul perish, in lonely frustration for the life you deserved, but have never been able to reach. Mindfulness Meditation Improves Substance Abuse Treatment Outcomes

Mindfulness meditation is a cornerstone of our holistic substance abuse treatment program. Each day at Ripple Recovery Ranch begins and ends with mindfulness practice. Mindfulness meditation skills are developed in regular yoga classes, relapse prevention groups, and recovery meetings. Residents are encouraged to bring mindful awareness to all daily activities. This helps develop more skillful ways of interacting with life circumstances. There’s a reason why we have anchored our substance abuse treatment program in the practice of mindfulness.  It works.

Reuters Health reports that “a [substance abuse] treatment program incorporating mindfulness meditation is better over the long term than traditional approaches at preventing relapses of drug and alcohol abuse, according to a new study.

One year after treatment for substance abuse, far fewer participants who got relapse-prevention training including mindfulness techniques had used drugs or alcohol compared to those given relapse-prevention therapy alone or a standard 12-step program.”  Read more here.
