NON 12 STEP RECOVERY METHODS: Mindfulness Meditation Reduces Addiction Relapse Rates

Mindfulness meditation is a cornerstone of our non 12 step recovery program. Each day at Ripple Recovery Ranch begins and ends with mindfulness practice. Instruction and guidance in mindfulness meditation is built into yoga and meditation classes, relapse prevention groups, and recovery meetings. Residents are encouraged to bring mindful awareness into all daily activities. This helps develop more skillful ways of interacting with life circumstances. There’s a reason why we have anchored our non 12 step recovery program in the practice of mindfulness.  It works.

Reuters Health reports that “a treatment program incorporating mindfulness meditation is better over the long term than traditional approaches at preventing relapses of drug and alcohol abuse, according to a new study.

One year after treatment for substance abuse, far fewer participants who got relapse-prevention training including mindfulness techniques had used drugs or alcohol compared to those given relapse-prevention therapy alone or a standard 12-step program.”  Read more here.

How Does Mindfulness Fit into a Non 12 Step Program?

Mindfulness is the practice of witnessing one’s present state from a non-judgmental perspective.  Physical sensations, thoughts, emotions, impulses, and urges are observed, but not acted upon.  This is a skill that is developed over time but also has immediate beneficial results.  An age-old Buddhist tradition, mindfulness has gained tremendous support from addiction and mental health care providers in recent years. This is because mindfulness supports greater control of one’s thought processes and regulation of emotions.  According to the American Psychological Association (source), research shows mindfulness promotes the following benefits:

  • Decreased Rumination (compulsive focused attention on the symptoms of one’s distress)
  • Reduced Stress
  • Decreased Negative Affect (anxiety, depression, etc.) and Increased Positive Affect
  • Increased Working Memory Capacity
  • Greater Focus
  • Cognitive Flexibility (non-rigid thought patterns)
  • Decreased Emotional Reactivity
  • Relationship Satisfaction
  • Self-Insight, Morality, Intuition, and Fear-Modulation
  • General Well-Being

Our non 12 step recovery program uses mindfulness as a tool to empower lasting recovery.

Meditation & Non 12 Step Recovery

Effective non 12 step recovery includes stress reduction practices. These practices serve as alternative coping skills and set a baseline for healthy living. Meditation is a powerful stress reduction technique that can actually change the structure of the brain. It is a specific mindfulness practice in which one sets aside time to actively practice mindful awareness. Meditation can be done while seated, lying down, and even walking. In meditation, attention is focused on one specific object, often the movement of breath. This focus engages voluntary control of the mind’s activity, as awareness is directed consistently to the breath. The Mayo Clinic reports the following benefits of meditation (source):

  • Gaining a new perspective on stressful situations
  • Building skills to manage stress
  • Increasing self-awareness
  • Focusing on the present
  • Reducing negative emotions

Regular meditation practice helps promote a balanced way of living that is vital to long-term recovery.  Residents receive guidance and instruction in developing a meditation practice. Meditation is incorporated into the daily structure of our non 12 step recovery program.

Meditation supports lasting recovery from addiction.
